Understanding Nutrition 12th Edition

It is not the typical nutrition book that talks about apples and oranges. She actually talks about "far out" stuff like spirulina, super dieters tea, ma huang, kombucha, probiotics, Qi gong, colonics etc. I wish that she would have gone into a little more detail about the alternative health stuff that you find in health food stores as I shop there alot. This books shows you how to calculate your Body Mass Index, how to calculate the amt of proteins, carbs and fats you need in your diet specifically for your weight and there is an index in the back that acts as a calorie guide to todays most popular foods. It not only tells you where you should be at ht/wt wise but also where your waist line should be and even calculations for that.
Buyer beware. Purchasing this book through Amazon might save you a few bucks but you aren't purchasing the same version of the book you would get in a university bookstore. The Amazon version does not contain an access code to connect to the supplemental web support referenced multiple times in this textbook. When I called customer support I was told that since Amazon doesn't specifically say the book contains the access code, I shouldn't have expected it to.

My professor assigned this text for my first ever online course. I was worried that with out the lectures that I would have a hard time understanding the material and properly completing my assignments. I found this text easy to understand and very informative. I really enjoy the controverisies at the end of the chapters. It gives you a relatable aspect of what you just read.

About the Author

Monica McGoldrick, LCSW, PhD (h.c.), Director of the Multicultural Family Institute in Highland Park, New Jersey, is also Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/n-/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She was Visiting Professor at Fordham University School of Social Service for 12 years. Ms. McGoldrick received her MSW in 1969 from Smith College School for Social Work, which later granted her one of the few honorary doctorates awarded by the school in its 60-year history. Other awards include the American Family Therapy Academy's award for Distinguished Contribution to Family Therapy Theory and Practice. An internationally known author, she speaks widely on culture, class, gender, the family life cycle, and other topics.

Joe Giordano, MSW, is a family therapist in private practice in Bronxville, New York. He was formerly Director of the American Jewish Committee's Center on Ethnicity, Behavior, and Communications, where he conducted pioneering studies on the psychological nature of ethnic identity and group behavior. The author of widely published articles on ethnicity, family, and the media, he served as host of Proud to Be Me, a PBS television program, and as producer of the audio series Growing Up in America.

Nydia Garcia-Preto, LCSW, is cofounder and Clinical Director of the Multicultural Family Institute. She has served as Visiting Professor at the Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work and as Director of the Adolescent Day Hospital at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. A noted family therapist, author, teacher, and lecturer, Ms. Garcia-Preto has published and presented widely on Puerto Rican and Latino families, Latinas, ethnic intermarriage, and families with adolescents. She is a highly respected trainer in the areas of cultural competence and organizational team building.

This book is a more tedious read than it needs to be because of a plethora of grammatical errors. The ill-placed comma on page 152, for example ("Finally, the communication structure or network, developed in the group impacts information flows among group members."), is the kind of thing that makes you stop and re-read the sentence a few times to make sure you extracted the correct meaning. There seem to be a lot of similar mistakes. I was required to buy this text for a course I was required to take. Since I wasn't looking forward to the course, my attention span and patience was short enough to begin with; this book is not helping.

Perhaps the single most accessible book on data visualizations. You are given a tour of the history of visualizations, the seminal contributions of people such as Playfair, Tukey, and others, a rogues' gallery of sorts of awful visualizations, a peek into small-multiples visualizations, and an exposition of the principles of good graphic design and visualizations. A must-have book for anyone interested in good data visualizations.

Tufte's contention is that a lack of adequate knowledge and expertise and a mistaken notion about numbers are to blame for bad visualizations. The principles of good visualizations, on the other hand, are few and simple. The book is all about exposing bad examples and enunciating these good principles, beautifully illustrated with examples, and printed on excellent quality paper.

This is a fairly wordy book, plenty of vocabulary, and online quizzes that don't match the book exactly but are a great asset for developing a midterm or final. I used this book in my undergrad art class. Lots of pictures of obscure art. It can definitely open student's eyes to different forms of art.

Out of all the textbooks I have read through, this is one of the only books that I am planning on keeping due to its value in working in business.

This book would be great for any of the following people:

Business Lawyer
Entrepreneur, starting their own business
Insurance Agent
Student learning about Business (Undergrad or Graduate, either)

This book had a lot of information that I took from it and helped me figure out a lot about lawsuits in business.

This book's lightweight and contains what you need for a typical econ course. Definitions are not brief or concise. They ARE lengthy. This book is great when supplemented by a college-level course but don't expect it to teach you microeconomis.

Neil A. Campbell

Neil Campbell combined the investigative nature of a research scientist with the soul of an experienced and caring teacher. He

earned his M.A. in Zoology from UCLA and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Riverside, where he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. Neil published numerous research articles on desert and coastal plants and how the sensitive plant (Mimosa) and other legumes move their leaves. His 30 years of teaching in diverse environments included general biology courses at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernadino Valley College, where he received the college’s first Outstanding Professor Award in 1986. Neil was a visiting scholar in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. In addition to his authorship of this book, he coauthored Biology: Concepts & Connections and Essential Biologywith Jane Reece. Neil died shortly after the initial planning of this revision.

Jane B. Reece

Lead author Jane Reece, Neil Campbell’s longtime collaborator, has participated on every edition of BIOLOGY—first as an editor and contributor, then as an author.
